3 factors driving gold
- PCEStrong PCE inflation and GDP lift bets on a December Fed hike
The September PCE price index rose 0.5% m/m and 3.6% y/y, up from 3.4%, while Core PCE picked up to 3.1% as expected. The advance estimate of Q3 GDP showed 3.4% annualised growth, above market forecasts of about 3.1–3.2% (BEA). Trading Economics notes that CME FedWatch puts the odds of a December Fed hike at about 75%, which weighs on non-yielding gold.
- FOMCFed holds, but two members want a hike
The Fed held rates at 3.75–4.00% at its 28 Oct meeting in a 10–2 vote, with Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack voting for a 0.25% hike. Mitrade says gold dipped to around $4,035 after the decision before recovering to near $4,056, but could not hold those gains after the strong economic data.
- DXYSofter dollar and yields help gold hold near $4,000
Krungthai Bank says the dollar index (DXY) eased to around 101.8 and the US 10-year Treasury yield fell to around 4.92% after topping 5.00% intraday, amid a sell-off in US tech stocks (Nasdaq −1.4%), which slowed gold’s decline. Middle East tensions pushing crude oil higher remain a risk for gold.

Upside / downside
Holds above $4,000 and retests $4,101–4,110
A break higher would target the $4,139–4,150 zone. A further dip in the dollar and yields, or a softer ECI reading that eases pressure on the Fed to hike, would help.
Breaks below $3,980–4,000
Selling could extend to the $3,932–3,951 zone. A hot ECI reading, Fed speakers backing a December hike and higher oil prices on Middle East tensions would add pressure.
